Demonstration - Peacock on Ampersand White

by Eliza Leahy, February 2008

Have you run out of Black Scratchboard and you aren't sure what to do with your White? Here is one idea of how you can use your white in a way that is unique and looks totally different to anything you would do with Clayboard Black!

First, I take a piece of Ampersand Clayboard White - 5" x 7" and do my sketch. As I want to get as few marks as possible on the area that will remain white, I do my sketch on paper first and tranfer it lightly with a blue pencil, then go over it with a normal graphite pencil so that I can see the lines clearly.

Click on the pictures to see them larger - will open in a new window.

Then I get out my Ampersand Inks - you can use any brand of inks, but I'm loving my Ampersand inks because of the way that they bond to the clay and scratch off. As you can see, I'm not producing a finished painting here, I'm just getting the colors where they should be.

The final step is to scratch in exactly the same manor as I would if I were working on any other scratchboard. The only difference is that the colors are already there.

I signed it using a normal black fibre tip pen.

I hope this has given you ideas for using White Scratchboard!
